Tien Beat, June 6 2008

Hi everyone!
Summer is well under way now, and I'm finally settling into my rhythm here in Easton. This is the first summer I've spent here since I went to college. I'm enjoying it immensely.

As soon as I got home, I started an internship at Coffee East, which has become a venue for surprisingly amazing acts. It's really strange and awesome to have so much talent coming through our little town, and I get to mix the sound for them. I've never been a sound guy before, but I learned pretty quick after a trial period involving a lot of eardrum-piercing feedback. A couple of cool bands you should check out: Carney, Judd & Maggie, Catie Curtis. I guess they stop by while they are playing in D.C., Baltimore, or Annapolis...they are all national acts and its a great internship because i get to rub elbows with people doing what I want to do.

Coolest thing about it: I get to play music here too...I opened for Catie Curtis, and I'm opening for Mark Bryan (of Hootie and the Blowfish) this Wednesday. If you're around, come check it out! Coffee East at 8 pm. It's a really exciting opportunity for me.

I'm looking for gigs to make a little money playing music...I just got one at a hotel near here and bluffed my way into a 2 hour set, even though I don't know 2 hours worth of songs. I will by Wednesday! I hope.

I'm also going to be a waiter/prep cook at Key Lime Cafe. I'm saving up some money for Semester at Sea next semester. Did I mention that? I'm going around the world on a boat in the Fall. Expect some particularly colorful Tien Beats starting August 26th.

I'm actually standing in the back of the coffee house right now behind the sound board...better get back to work. Hope all is well! I'd love to visit all of you east coast folk while I'm here, send me a line.

Love,
Tien

Lesson 1 - Four Agreements (from a musician)

There's a few books I frequently recommend, when I'm feeling inspired to share.  "The Four Agreements" is probably at the top of the list, with a shout out to the Tao Te Ching. I came across a video I came across on youtube that served as a nice refresher on the concepts behind the book: I thought it might be fun to riff on some of the wisdom imparted, from a musical perspective.   Here's a quote from Lesson 1 of the video:  " You — that force of life — are always transforming, always evolving, always creating. What you’re creating is a story — a virtual reality that becomes your mind. You, that force of life, are also creating your physical body, a world made by billions of living beings — atoms, molecules, cells, tissues, and organs — until the whole being is one. Your body is a universe. The earth is another universe. The sun and the planets are another universe. And if you expand your awareness, you’ll see that all the universes are connected. Every one o...

Heard this gem at work today

Was trimming today and this came on the "radio". It's cumbia, but it might be fun to play it as a forro... Colombians have porro, Brazilians have forro.  Wonder what the history is?

Brazil 2012 Day 7-15

Week 2 summary: Enjoying Itajai and Balneario, went on a weekend trip to Ibiraquera, wrote some music and learned some more Portuguese Shoutouts: Evandro, Luis, Jota, Paula, Anny, Guilherme, Tulio, Pablo, Fernando, Maria Amalia, Duda, Leonardo, Mariana, Felipe, Heron, Colby, Mamae, Papai Monday, August 27th (Day 7) – Itajai I go for a long walk around downtown Itajai. I hang out at a cafĂ© for a while. I go to a yoga class, which is great practice for my Portuguese vocabulary of body parts.  I return home, and as I fix myself some dinner, Papai is blasting Hall and Oates in the computer room and taking a nap.  Awesome.  Later, Paula takes me to her gym, where there seems to be a resurgence of 1980’s fashion trends; the female contingent is sporting a significant abundance of such items as leg warmers and/or neon animal print tights. Definitely saw a scrunchie or two. Awesome. Tuesday, August 28th (Day 8) – Itajai It’s a rainy day. I spend the day at home with Ma...
